Almost four years after the release of her debut album Pure Heroine, Lorde has returned more dynamic than ever with a brand new song and a record in the works. Green Light is the first single to be released off her upcoming Melodrama album (due in the summer of 2017) and it looks like we can expect great things from her once more.
Unlike Lorde’s previous gloomier music, Green Light sounds like pure fun, the kind of music you’d dance to non-stop at a party. Only if you listen carefully, the song’s actually about a break-up! Talking to Zane Lowe, the singer revealed it tells the story of her “first major heartbreak”. “It’s not something that I really am used to writing about,” she said.
Then of course, she realised that the track was strangely upbeat for its angry and sad lyrics, but aren’t we all angry and sad once a relationship ends badly? “I realised this is that drunk girl at the party dancing around crying about her ex-boyfriend who everyone thinks is a mess… That’s her tonight and tomorrow she starts to rebuild. And that’s the song for me,” explained Lorde.
Whether you’re recently broken-up or not, Green Light will surely make you want to dance. It’s nice seeing Lorde experimenting with those beats, offering us her most lively track to date. Plus, we get to see her dance in clubs, on top of cars and even in bathrooms; if that’s not uplifting, then I don’t know what is.
