It’s been 16 years since Baz Luhrmann’s classic, Moulin Rouge, hit theatres worldwide, but the film still holds a special place in true romantics’ hearts. It’s no wonder, considering the undeniable chemistry of Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, which gave life to the movie’s already wild spirit.
So it was about time the co-stars sat down to talk about how the Moulin Rouge phenomenon came about. The two of them appeared on Variety’s Actors on Actors series to basically let us know that Moulin Rouge was just as exciting and crazy ‘backstage’ as it turned out to be on screen!
“I remember absinthe being passed out at one point and me going, ‘Is this safe?’” said Kidman, reminiscing about the partying that went on behind the scenes. What’s even more fascinating is the fact that the shooting process lasted an entire year, with the script quite often based on the actors’ own improvisations.
Well, they don’t make them like this anymore!
It’s not very often that we see Ellen DeGeneres cook on her show and this was not one of those times, either! However, chef Giada De Laurentiis did try to teach her and Nicole Kidman how to prepare a couple of seemingly easy Italian dishes.
While Kidman was slightly more into this than Ellen, both ladies were finding it hard to keep up with De Laurentiis’ rhythm; let alone roll some proper risotto balls! To be honest, the whole thing was supposed to be quick, and producer Andy’s “moving along” gestures did not help!
Kidman’s insane efforts to actually “move this along” were pretty funny as was this entire cooking process. And even though that focaccia in the end was apparently “a little tough”, it had been sitting there for five hours so it makes total sense… Simply hilarious.
So some things don’t always turn out the way you want in life… If Jimmy Fallon was a better host back when he met Nicole Kidman, she could have been married to him instead of Keith Urban right now!
The actress appeared on The Tonight Show, where she may have revealed too much information on hers and the TV host’s first meeting. When she arrived at Fallon’s house along with a mutual friend, she sort of hoped for something more.
But Fallon was so clueless as to open the door wearing his sweatpants and a baseball cap looking all so indifferent. Poor Nicole assumed there was clearly no chemistry there…
Today’s lesson: next time Nicole Kidman steps into your apartment, don’t try to play it laid-back; dress smartly and smile, because you never know what could happen!
It is this time of the year again and we can’t wait to hear all about the films that will premiere as part of the Cannes Film Festival. Of course, I say ‘hear’ because as much as I would love to be somewhere even remotely close to the French Riviera at the moment, it’s not going to happen.
So what we already know is that the festival will open its gates with the Grace of Monaco, starring Nicole Kidman in the role of the ‘50s iconic actress and Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly. Reviews by critics who’ve seen the film are not even mixed; all the signs point to a disaster but of course, nothing’s been decided yet…
I can’t help but wonder, though, is Kidman worthy enough of such a role? Judging by her lately too Botox-ed face and her sort of expressionless look, I think director Olivier Dahan could have picked a more suitable actress to portray the spark and grace of Kelly. But we’ll just have to wait and see…
